Senior Staff Software Engineer (IoT)

TL;DR

Senior Staff Software Engineer (IoT Protocols): Leading the architecture and delivery of IoT and smart automation protocols to align devices, gateways, and cloud services with an accent on secure transport, command and control, and interoperability across Z-Wave, Matter, PowerG, and ZigBee. Focus on designing fault-tolerant distributed systems, building cloud translation services, and establishing reusable patterns for highly available services.

Location: Tysons, Virginia (Hybrid: work from office 4 days a week). Sponsorship for employment authorization is not available.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture and delivery of IoT protocols, including Z-Wave, Matter, PowerG, and ZigBee.
• Define protocol architecture for onboarding, secure transport, telemetry, and OTA updates.
• Build gateway and cloud translation services to normalize device semantics with a focus on latency and throughput.
• Mentor engineers and establish reusable architectural patterns and best practices.
• Collaborate with Operations on deployments, on-call rotations, and capacity planning for cloud infrastructure.
• Deliver SDKs and tools that enable partner integration and certification.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of software development experience with ownership of highly available services.
• Proven leadership in mentoring engineers and building reusable platforms.
• Expertise in object-oriented programming; C# and .NET are a plus.
• Experience designing and operating secure, fault-tolerant distributed systems in production.
• Hands-on experience with Z-Wave, Matter, PowerG, or ZigBee, including commissioning and security.

Nice to have

• Experience with Thread, BLE, Wi-Fi, or cellular technologies.
• Knowledge of MQTT, HTTP, WebSockets, or gRPC.
• Security expertise in TLS, DTLS, key management, and threat modeling.
• Embedded experience with C/C++ on RTOS or Linux and packet analysis tools.
• Experience with high-throughput telemetry ingestion and storage.
