Staff Software Engineer (Distributed Systems): Leading the design and delivery of core control-plane infrastructure for Confluent Cloud with an accent on scalability, reliability, and distributed systems architecture. Location: Remote within Canada. Must have the ability to work in Canada without sponsorship.

Salary: 133,700 - 248,300 CAD per year

What you will do

• Own end-to-end architecture and delivery of complex control-plane systems, including APIs, controllers, and orchestration workflows.
• Lead high-leverage technical initiatives by clarifying requirements and driving execution across multiple teams.
• Improve system reliability and operations by establishing SLOs, observability, and safe rollout patterns.
• Collaborate with cross-functional organizations such as Cloud Platform, Kafka, Security, and SRE to align on platform direction.
• Mentor engineers and provide high-quality design and code reviews to elevate the team's technical bar.
• Optimize developer experience by enhancing tooling, automation, and CI/CD strategies.

Requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience delivering complex backend or distributed systems to production.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems design (consistency models, failure modes, scalability).
• Proficiency in Go, Java, or Scala.
• Hands-on experience with Cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and Kubernetes.
• Must be based in Canada and have legal authorization to work without sponsorship.
• Not eligible for candidates from US sanctioned countries (including Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and specific regions of Ukraine).

Nice to have

• Experience building control-plane systems, metadata services, or provisioning workflows.
• Background with Apache Kafka or other streaming data systems.
• Experience with multi-region, high-availability, or disaster-recovery architectures.
• Expertise in security-sensitive infrastructure (mTLS, identity, certificates).
• Contributions to open source projects or technical public speaking.
